It’s always so amazing to see the work of women who put their heart and soul into their businesses, hobbies, and creative endeavors. The things that catch my eye when looking for my ambassadors – women who work hard, are willing to put themselves out there for what they love and believe in, support other women, and are just, well, all around amazing! Every one of the women on the team are all of these and more, and I’m excited to share a bit about brand ambassador Melissa Klein today!
Melissa Klein is a baby, child and family photographer who focuses on fine art portraiture. Her studio is located in St. Paul, Minnesota, but she resides just north of the cites with her husband, two kids and two Siberian Huskies. Self-proclaimed goofball, hockey fanatic, and lover of cold, rainy weather. She loves to travel and listen to live music. If not at work, Melissa can usually be found outdoors with her kids (both the human and furry ones), at the hockey rink or cozied up on the couch with a hot cup of coffee. No matter what she’s doing, she almost always has a camera in hand. To see Melissa’s work, please visit her website at Melissa Klein Photography.
How long have you been a photographer?
I’ve been a professional photographer for 6.5 years. I’ve always had a camera in hand, but turned my hobby into a business in 2010 and haven’t looked back since.
What made you decide to pursue photography as a career?
I decided to pursue this profession after I found out it was a possibility. I actually had no idea that anything existed other than JC Penny and Kiddie Kandids! A friend knew that I loved taking photos of my kids, and asked me to take photos of her newborn baby. Then she told all her friends about me, and found me some more clients. She kind of nudged me into it, and I’m so glad she did!
How has your photography evolved over the years?
My photography has definitely evolved over the past 6 years. I started out buying every single prop, blanket, chair, lens, etc. that I saw other people using. Turns out, I’m not much of a prop photographer. I just actually figured that out over the past couple of years. I was really drawn to simple, clean images. So that’s where I’m at today.
What kind of camera(s) do you own and what role do they play in your life?
I have several cameras, but the main one I use is my Nikon D800. I recently bought the D810 but I just can’t seem to make the switch – I still use my D800 for every session. I also have a D700 as a backup. For personal stuff, I am really bad about bringing around the “big” camera. I bought a Sony RX100mII just so I had something that I could always have on me, and I love it! It’s been nice to have something between an iphone and my work camera for everyday stuff. And I LOVE to photograph the everyday stuff. Even if it’s just a quick snap shot, I still make sure to get the shot, and I still print them off and put them in albums.
What do you love most about your bluebird chic strap?
My bluebird chic strap style is similar to my photography style – clean and simple. My most recently acquired Bluebird Chic strap is the solid cream scarf strap, which I LOVE!! My previous one was cream with a little bit of color. In real life, I only wear black and grey for the most part, so it’s nice to have a little bit of contrast, or a little pop of color. I get several compliments on my strap – it’s well built, comfortable, and gorgeous!!
